Dawood Ibrahim About: Underworld Don Dawood Ibrahim is said to have been poisoned in Karachi, Pakistan. According to reports circulating on Pakistani social media, he has been admitted to the hospital and is in a serious condition. While the report has yet to be confirmed, Dawood is said to be the only patient on the floor of the hospital where he is being treated. The shocking news has sparked speculation across Pakistan about who gave the poison to the underworld mafia. 

Dawood Ibrahim has been in the headlines from time to time because of his unprecedented attacks in various cities across India, including the Mumbai 1993 attacks that killed 257 people with more than 700 injured. While there are many conspiracies surrounding Dawood, let us dig deep into the life of the dangerous mafia that has shaken the country with his terror. 

 

Dawood Ibrahim Early Life, Siblings, Parents

Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar was born in Khed Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, on December 26, 1955. He grew up in the Zadgaon neighborhood of Dongri, a Mumbai neighborhood in the Konkan region. Dawood went to Ahmed Sailor High School but dropped out because of financial problems in the family. Dawood’s father, Sheikh Ibrahim Ali Kaskar, was a Mumbai Police head constable, and his mother, Amina, was a housewife.

He has four sisters, Saeeda Parker, Haseena Parker (deceased), Farzana Saud Tungekar (deceased), and Mumtaz Shaikh, and seven brothers, Sabir Ibrahim Kaskar (who died in a gang war in Mumbai), Iqbal Ibrahim Kaskar (imprisoned in Thane Jail), Noora Ibrahim (deceased), Anis Ibrahim, Sabir Ahmad, Humayun Ibrahim Kaskar (deceased), and Mustaqueem Ali. In 2014, Haseena Parker, his sister and the well-known “Queen of Mumbai,” passed away from cardiac arrest. Rahim Faki, the husband of Mumtaz, was wanted in connection with the JJ shootout case; Farzana’s husband is Saud Tungekar.

Dawood Ibrahim Criminal Background

Dawood began engaging in theft, robbery, and fraud while he was still in his teens. He eventually became a member of the local crime syndicate Don Baashu Dada and the gang of gangsters in the area. He broke away from the group in the late 1970s and joined forces with his older brother Shabir Ibrahim Kaskar to form his own gang. Dawood took over as the only leader of his gang, the D-Company after the rival Pathan gang killed his brother Shabir. He was involved in drug trafficking, real estate, extortion, and gold smuggling.  Dawood was wanted by the Mumbai Police for the murder of Samad Khan at the time he fled to Dubai in 1986. With the help of his right hand, Chhota Rajan, he expanded his gang to over 5000 members and tens of crores of rupees in revenue annually by the early 1990s.

The Indian government declared him as one of the masterminds behind the 1993 Mumbai attacks. After the attacks, he fled to Karachi, where he was reportedly poisoned recently. Dawood Ibrahim travelled to Afghanistan under the protection of the Taliban in the late 1990s. The syndicate has consistently sought to sabotage India through riots, terrorism, civil disobedience, and the circulation of counterfeit Indian currency notes. According to reports, Dawood provided logistics for the 2008 Mumbai attacks. His crime syndicate is spread across Asia, Europe, and Africa, with India accounting for more than 40% of its earnings. 

Dawood Ibrahim Marriage, Children

Dawood is married to Mahjabeen, also known as Zubeena Zareen. They have three children, two daughters and a son. Mahrukh Ibrahim, Dawood’s eldest daughter, married Junaid Miandad, the son of Pakistani cricketer Javed Miandad, in 2006. Mehreen, his daughter, married Ayub, a Pakistani-American, in 2011. On September 25, 2011, his son Moin married Saniya, the daughter of a London-based businessman. Several members of his family, including his brother, Iqbal, currently reside in Mumbai. 

Mastermind of Mumbai Bombings

Dawood is widely suspected of being behind the Bombay bombings in March 1993. In 2003, the Indian and US governments designated Ibrahim as a “Global Terrorist.” Ibrahim is currently on the Indian government’s “Most Wanted List.” In a public speech in June 2017, Ram Jethmalani confirmed that, following the Bombay blasts, Dawood Ibrahim called him from London, saying he was willing to come to India and stand trial on the condition that he not be subjected to any third-degree police treatment. Sharad Pawar had been informed of this by Jethmalani, but the ruling politicians rejected the plea. 

Dawood Ibrahim Bollywood Connections

Ibrahim has been connected to the funding of the Bollywood film industry through his syndicate D-Company. D-Company provided funding for several Bollywood studios and motion pictures in the 1980s and 1990s. Ibrahim was rumored to be romantically involved with many celebrities, such as Bollywood actress Mandakini and beauty pageant competitor Anita Ayoob. It is also known that D-Company was involved in the killings of Bollywood producers Gulshan Kumar and Javed Siddique.

Movies on Dawood Ibrahim

The 2004 film Black Friday, directed by Anurag Kashyap was based on Dawood’s life. Movies like Company (2002), D (2005), Risk (2007), Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), Once Upon a Time in Mumbai (2010) Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara! (2013), D-Day, Shootout at Wadala, and Dongri Ka Raja (2016) are somehow based on Dawood Ibrahim’s life and D-company The film Haseena Parkar (2017) is a biographical crime film based on his sister, Haseena Parkar, portrayed by Shardhha Kapoor.

Dawood Ibrahim Books

Hussain Zaidi, a former investigative journalist from India, has written two non-fiction books Dongri to Dubai: Six Decades of the Mumbai Mafia and Byculla to Bangkok that follow the history of the Mumbai Mafia. The film Shootout at Wadala is based on the book Dongri to Dubai.
