Dussehra 2024: Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is one of India’s most prominent festivals. It is celebrated at the end of the Navaratri festival and commemorates the triumph of good over evil. This vibrant celebration has great cultural and religious significance and is observed with tremendous excitement and joy across the country.

Dussehra 2024 Date

Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day (Dashami) of the month of Ashwin, which varies year to year according to the lunar Hindu calendar. It usually happens in September or October. This year’s Dussehra will be held on October 12.

Dussehra Festival Importance

Dussehra represents the victory of righteousness and justice. According to the epic Ramayana, Dussehra marks the day Lord Rama conquered the demon king Ravana and rescued his bride, Sita. This act of righteousness and courage is commemorated as a reminder that virtue eventually triumphs over evil.

Additionally, in eastern India, particularly in West Bengal, Dussehra is celebrated as Durga Puja Vijayadashami, commemorating Goddess Durga's victory over Mahishasura. This festival commemorates Goddess Durga's power and protection while also celebrating feminine strength and divinity.

Dussehra Celebrations

In North India, massive idols of Ravana, his brother Kumbhakarna, and his son Meghnad are burned in public places to symbolize the defeat of evil forces. The Ramayana is enacted in performances known as Ramlila, which conclude in the burning of these effigies.

In West Bengal, Assam, and Odisha, the final day of the Durga Puja festival coincides with Dussehra. Huge pandals are constructed with intricately decorated Durga idols. The event ends with the immersion of the idols in rivers or lakes. Women participate in Sindoor Khela, a tradition in which they smear each other with sindoor powder to represent marital love.

In South Indian states, Dussehra is celebrated with Ayudha Puja, in which people worship their tools, vehicles, and machines in the hope of achieving success in their pursuits. The Mysore Dasara is particularly well-known in Mysuru, Karnataka, where it features royal processions, cultural performances, and decorated elephants.

People in Western states celebrate Dussehra by doing Shastra Puja (worshipping weapons), a historic warrior activity. During Navaratri, people fast, dance and perform the lively Garba and Dandiya Raas dances. In Maharashtra, people exchange Apta tree leaves, which represent gold, as a gesture of friendliness and success.

Dussehra brings people together through shared celebrations that foster unity and a sense of belonging. The celebration is about more than just celebrating triumph; it is about introspection, self-improvement, and reaffirming trust in the power of good. Celebrate good over evil and share these wishes, images, and messages with your family and close ones and share the feeling of power, determination, and integrity.
