Former Japan PM Shinzo Abe dies, PM Narendra Modi announces national mourning

Former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe has passed away. Shinzo Abe was shot two times during his speech on Friday morning, the man who attacked Abe was immediately caught. He died during treatment. 

National mourning for Shinzo Abe

In the wake of the tragic demise of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the Indian government has decided to observe a day of national mourning. Tomorrow, on Saturday, the national flag will be hoisted on all government buildings. Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a tweet saying, "As a mark of our deep respect for former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, there will be a day of national mourning on 9th July 2022."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences by tweeting. He tweeted, "I am shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of one of my dearest friends, Shinzo Abe. He was a great global statesman, an outstanding leader and a remarkable administrator. He dedicated his life to making Japan and the world a better place."

He said Abe made a huge contribution in taking India-Japan relations to the level of a special strategic and global partnership. Today the whole of India mourns with Japan and we stand in solidarity with our Japanese brothers and sisters in this difficult moment. He shared a picture from his most recent meeting with his dear friend, Shinzo Abe in Tokyo, saying Always passionate about strengthening India-Japan relations, he had just taken over as the President of the Japan-India Association .

PM Modi said that my attachment with Shinzo Abe is many years old. I knew him during my tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujarat and our friendship continued even after I became the PM. His outlook on the economy and global affairs always left a deep impression on me. During my recent visit to Japan, I had the opportunity to meet Shinzo Abe again and discuss many issues. He was as funny and intelligent as ever. Little did I know that this would be our last meeting. My deepest condolences to his family and the Japanese people.
