Recently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued another alert for not using Indian-Made Cold Syrup commonly used in Iraq. The common cold syrup, known as “Cold Out,” has been proven to be contaminated by the global health organisation in its medical report. The WHO stated, “The sample was found to contain unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol (0.25%) and ethylene glycol (2.1%) as contaminants. The acceptable safety limit for both ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol is no more than 0.10%.” The health organisation added that diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol both have fatal risks to human health, including vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, kidney problems, and more.
This is another instance when Indian medicines are claimed to be hazardous to health. Earlier in 2023, the Indian government banned 14 fixed-dose combination (FDC) drugs due to their high health risk and no “therapeutic justification”. FDC drugs refer to those medicines that have a set ratio of two or more active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in them. The banned drugs include those medicines used for the common cold, fever-like problems.
