Gabriel Attal:  Gabriel Atta has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of France by French President Emmanuel Macron replacing Elizabeth Borne from the office. Attal is the youngest political official to hold the office of Prime Minister at the age of 34. In a series of firsts, he is also the first openly gay individual to be seated in the second-highest position of the country’s political hierarchy.      

Family and Education 

Attal was born to a Tunisian-Jewish lawyer and film producer, Yves Attal, and an orthodox Christian mother, Marie de Couriss on 16 March 1989 in Clamart, commune of France.

He did his schooling at a private `school, École Alsacienne, followed by enrolling in law at Panthéon-Assas University. His master’s major was Public Affairs from Sciences Po. 

Political Career 

Attal was born with a silver spoon, with privileges like access to French political elites and officials at a very early age, however, it is his steadfast nature, quick wit, and striking communication reflected in impactful orations in public that set him apart from the crowd of other political youths.

His maiden engagement with a political activity took place in 2006 youth protests in the country. He joined the Socialist Party in 2006 supporting the presidential candidate Ségolène Royal, campaigning for the 2007 election.     

At the youthful age of 23, he was shouldering the responsibility of speechwriting and parliamentary liaison as an advisor to the Minster of Health, Marisol Touraine.

Attal climbed up several political ranks in a short span, from being the secretary of state at the education ministry to head of LREM, government spokesperson, and minister of Public Action and Accounts in 2022. 

In 2018, he was the chairperson of  La République En Marche! And ran for the presidential election as one of the three favourite candidates but decided to withdraw his name just a day before the election.    

On January 9, 2024, he was appointed as the Prime Minister of France at the age of 34, becoming the first openly gay man to hold the office after serving as the minister of national education and youth.
