More than Rs 2.5 lakh crore (about $30 billion) is the net worth of Tirupati's renowned Lord Venkateswara temple, surpassing the market capitalization of Nestle, ONGC, and IOC, two state-owned oil giants, as well as IT services provider Wipro. For the first time since its creation in 1933, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, caretaker of the temple devoted to Tirupati's presiding deity, disclosed its financial status. Its assets include 960 properties around India, 10.25 tonnes of gold deposits in banks, 2.5 tonnes of gold jewellery, over Rs 16,000 crore in bank accounts, and about 2.5 tonnes of gold. More than Rs 2.5 lakh crore is the sum of all these. Some blue-chip Indian companies are worth more than the Tirupati temple's net worth at the current market price, according to stock exchange data.
