Dhanteras is observed on the thirteenth lunar day (Trayodashi) of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. In 2024, this will be October 29. Dhanteras traditionally marks the beginning of Diwali festivities, which last for many days and culminate with the Diwali celebration. The day is especially auspicious for purchasing valuable commodities such as gold, silver, and home products, as these purchases are said to bring good fortune and benefits ahead. 

Dhanteras Significance

Dhanteras honours Lord Dhanvantari and Lord Kubera. According to mythology, on this day, Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda and healing, emerged from Samudra Manthan with a jug of Amrit. Dhanvantari is revered as the gods' physician, and people seek his blessings on Dhanteras to ensure good health and longevity.

Kubera, the god of wealth, is also worshipped during Dhanteras. The holiday represents not just worldly wealth, but also the health and prosperity of individuals and families. Worshiping Kubera on this day is thought to bring prosperity and financial stability.

Dhanteras Celebration 

On Dhanteras, people clean and adorn their homes, and many purchase gold, silver, or kitchenware in the belief that these will bring good fortune and money. Dhanteras also commemorates Lakshmi, the goddess of riches, who brings prosperity to households and enterprises. Rangolis, ornamental lights, and clay lamps (diyas) are placed at the entryway and around the residence to welcome divine energy and happy vibes.

A traditional Dhanteras ritual is to buy gold, silver, and expensive jewelry, as well as kitchenware and new household things. In the evening, families assemble to celebrate Dhanteras Puja, which honors Lord Dhanvantari and Lord Kubera. Devotees present flowers, sweets, and fruits while praying for health, money, and prosperity.
