Hardeep Singh Biography: Prime Minister Narendra Modi took oath for the third time after winning the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. This is the third time that Narendra Modi has been selected as the Prime Minister of India. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Sunday, 9 June. apart from PM Modi, 72 other ministers took the oath, including 30 Cabinet Ministers, five Ministers of State with Independent charge, and 36 Ministers of State. Many new faces have been elected as the new Union Ministers in Modi 3.0, including Chirag Paswan, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Jitan Ram Manjhi, and more. Some of the ministers have been retained for the new govt, including Hardeep Singh Puri. Hardeep Singh is a former Indian Diplomat who represented India at the UN from 2009 to 2013.

Early Life & Education

Hardeep Singh Puri was born on February 15, 1952 in Delhi. His father was a civil servant, and he attended boarding schools in India because he was posted in countries without English-language education. He is a graduate of The Frank Anthony Public School in New Delhi. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Arts in History from Hindu College at the University of Delhi. He worked as a history lecturer at St. Stephen’s College in Delhi.

Hardeep Singh Puri Career

Hardeep Puri was the Joint Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of External Affairs from 1994 to 1997 and 1999 to 2002. From 1997 to 1999, he worked as the Government of India’s Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence. He was India’s ambassador to Brazil. He later worked as Secretary to the Government of India (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs from 2009 to 2013.

Puri has held important diplomatic positions in Brazil (as ambassador), Japan, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom (as Deputy High Commissioner). Between 1988 and 1991, he was the Coordinator of the UNDP/UNCTAD Multilateral Trade Negotiations Project, which assisted developing countries in the Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations. He also chaired the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee from January 2011 to February 2013, and was President of the UN Security Council in August 2011 and again in November 2012.

Political Career

  • Puri joined the International Peace Institute as a senior advisor in June of 2013. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in January 2014. Puri became Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs after Venkaiah Naidu was appointed Vice President of India in 2017. In May 2019, he ran as a BJP candidate from Amritsar but lost to Congress' Gurjeet Singh Aujla.

  • Puri was appointed as Minister of State (with Independent Charge) for Civil Aviation and Commerce and Industry in May 2019. When the cabinet was reshuffled in July 2021, he was promoted to the position of Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, alongside the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs.

  • During the Russian invasion of Ukraine in March 2022, he was sent to Budapest, Hungary, to assist with coordination efforts. He was one of four ministers who led a special envoy to successfully return 6711 students to India as part of the Operation Ganga initiative.

Hardeep Singh Puri Personal Life

The spouse of Hardeep Singh Puri is Ambassador Lakshmi Puri, who was formerly the Deputy Executive Director of UN Women and an Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations. Puri joined the Indian Foreign Service and later joined the UN cadre. They have two daughters. His brother, Pradeep Puri, is an IAS officer from the 1979 batch who helped build the DND Flyway.
