HMPV Virus Outbreak: In China, the rapid rise in respiratory diseases has resulted in more hospital admissions and increasing demand for healthcare services. Health experts are particularly concerned about the rise of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that affects several Asian countries and is quickly expanding in northern China, according to the Chinese Disease Control and Prevention Center. HMPV typically infects youngsters, although it can affect people of any age, posing serious public health implications. In this video, we will learn about HMPV, its symptoms, and how it can be prevented.
HMPV is an enclosed, single-stranded RNA virus discovered in 2001 by Dutch researchers. It is linked to respiratory infections and has been present for more than 60 years, causing symptoms such as cough, fever, rhinitis, and, in extreme cases, bronchitis or pneumonia. According to The Lancet Global Health, HMPV accounts for 1% of all acute lower respiratory infection-related deaths in children under the age of five. Currently, there is no vaccination or particular treatment for HMPV, therefore management focuses on symptom relief. To slow the spread of the virus, public health officials are emphasizing preventive measures such as frequent handwashing, avoiding contact with infected people, and wearing masks.
