HMPV Virus: The Human Metapneumovirus is a single-stranded RNA virus that is comparable to the coronavirus but less virulent. It is primarily transmitted through droplet infections, such as coughing or sneezing, and has a 48-72 hour incubation period. High-grade fever, nasal congestion, coughing, and respiratory discomfort are common symptoms, affecting children under the age of five, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems. The majority of cases are moderate and manageable at home with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter drugs; hospitalization is only required in severe cases of respiratory distress.
While HMPV is not a pandemic threat like COVID-19, precautionary measures are always required. To control its spread, frequent handwashing, staying at home when ill, and consulting with a healthcare provider if symptoms continue, are all key steps. Vaccination against influenza and maintaining good immunity help to lower risks, particularly among vulnerable groups.
