Lust Stories Full Review

Directed by Konkona Sen Sharma, R Balki, Amit R Sharma and Sujoy Ghosh. The first story is directed by R Balki, featuring Mrunal Thakur, Angad Bedi and Neena Gupta. Two sets of parents nod along peacefully as Angad Bedi and Mrunal Thakur smile subtly in R. Balki’s narrative of the modern Arrange Marriage, but the girl’s dadi (Neena Gupta) asks, “Did you do it?” and everyone goes numb and shocked at the blatant declaration about “test-driving the car” from a grandma, whose so-called society thinks sex is a topic not to talk publicly about, and only means for lineage, not for pleasure.

The first film emphasises on two families who want their children to marry each other, but the grandma interrupts by questioning and explaining the need to determine the sexual compatibility of the couple for a happy married life. The film seems to be a subtle jab at all those families who act like they’re really progressive and contemporary by letting their kids choose their life partner, but the minute you bring up “sex,” there’s discomfort and a look of disgust in their eyes. We can’t imagine a daadi other than Neena Gupta for this bold role, as she delivers her dialogues with utmost sincerity and seriousness with a tinge of satire.

The next film is directed by Konkona Sen Sharma, which tells us the story of the hard subject of women accepting their sexuality with remarkable understanding. While experiencing a sexual awakening, although in a perverted way, two ladies from various socioeconomic classes develop a rhythm and synchronicity. Isheeta, a wealthy but lonely fashion designer, enters the room one afternoon to find Seema hard at work on her bed. The stranger turns out to be Seema’s spouse, who enters the house undetected at odd hours. The three of them then engage in an odd game of seeing and unseeing. It’s unusual for Hindi films to address voyeurism through the eyes of a woman, and even more unusual to divide that lens in two. Tillotama Shome and Amruta Subhash give strong performances, and Konkona handles this narrative with the necessary delicacy.

The next film, directed by Sujoy Ghosh, follows the hot off-screen couple, Tamannaah Bhatia and Vijay Varma. Vijay runs across Shanti (Tamannaah Bhatia), his ex-wife who vanished eleven years ago. Although Ghosh’s film seems to be a confused, amateurish thriller, playing around with the concept of passion while sticking to his thriller genre, it seems that pairing up Tamannaah and Vijay was much of a big twister to bring up the energy and spark.

The last one is directed by Amit R Sharma, and stars Kajol as Chanda. Chanda has a depressing, oppressive life, and wishes to send her son to England for further education, but her violent, caste- and aristocracy-obsessed husband (Kumud Mishra), finds the idea disgusting and begins leering at the new maid who moves into this home. This part is quite not that appreciative, despite Kajol’s outstanding portrayal, neither rationally nor emotionally. The movie contains scenes of domestic violence. Kumud Mishra portrays a patriarchal, who gambles and coerces young girls into having sex, and at night, beats and sexually assaults her wife.

Lust Stories Netflix

Combining these four films into a 2-hour discussion on women’s sexuality from their point of view. The main point of Lust Stories 2 outweighs the drama and shenanigans that might detract from the plot, despite a few successes and a few misses. Be sure to watch it on Netflix to know what’s your take on the movie.
