GBS Disease: Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare autoimmune neurological condition in which the immune system incorrectly assaults its own nerves. A recent case in Maharashtra's Solapur demonstrated its severity when a 41-year-old chartered accountant developed diarrhea, followed by a dramatic worsening in health. Despite medical intervention, his health deteriorated, resulting in a loss of consciousness. In this video, we discuss the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for GBS so that you can better understand the disease.
GBS develops after bacterial or viral diseases, such as gastrointestinal or respiratory problems. The symptoms usually begin with weakness or tingling in the legs and proceed upward to affect the arms and face. If left undetected, severe cases can result in paralysis, difficulty breathing, and the need for ventilator assistance. The specific cause of GBS is unknown, but the World Health Organization reports that infections such as Campylobacter jejuni are common causes. This bacterium, prevalent in the gastrointestinal tract, causes symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea.
