What is PM Modi-launched One Sun One World One Grid Initiative?

OSOWOG Initiative:  During the inaugural summit of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) in 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the One Sun One World One Grid (OSOWOG) Mission, with the first step taken on October 8, 2023. The OSOWOG is a project to establish a transnational electrical grid that will supply power globally. The initiative was launched jointly by PM Modi and then-UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Let us know some key points about the One Sun One World One Grid mission. 

 

Clean Energy Global Mission

The GGI-OSOWOG will bring together a worldwide coalition of governments, international financial and technical institutions, lawmakers, power system operators, and thought leaders to speed the development of the new infrastructure required for a clean energy-powered world. According to the initiative, the key areas will be: 

  • Investing in solar, wind, storage, and other renewable energy generating in areas rich in renewable resources in order to sustain a global grid.

  • Long-distance cross-border transmission lines are being built to connect renewable energy plants.

  • Modernising power systems through developing and deploying cutting-edge methodologies and technology.

  • Supporting the worldwide transition to zero-emission cars by embracing electric vehicles’ role in improving grid flexibility

  • Increasing investment in solar mini-grids and off-grid systems to assist underprivileged populations in gaining access to clean, inexpensive, and dependable electricity.

  • Creating new financial instruments and market frameworks for solar grid infrastructure.
