Screen-Free Winter Activities:  Dropping temperatures and rising pollution have made it difficult for children to step out of the house as often. Indoor, they instinctively reach for phones or televisions to keep themselves entertained. Parents also sometimes have to use these screens’ quick fixes to lift up kids' moods. However, a little planning beforehand can help parents maintain a balanced screen time for their children.

A familiar place for kids, home may not seem an entertaining place to kids, but parents can work towards changing their perspective on the same. One way is to let them be freer and have limited restrictions inside the house. Some of the following activities can help:

  1. Let them cook: The kitchen is a restricted place for kids at home for safety and hygiene reasons. That also makes it a fascinating space for them. Allow them in the kitchen under your supervision and ask for their help accordingly.
  2. Crafty corner: Nudge the creative genius of the kids by giving them a place to express their artistic and crafty side. Develop a corner of the house as their free space to make art, and create crafty objects that they can later use to adorn the house.
  3. Go treasure hunt: Kids might feel they know all about their home. Keep them up for a challenge to go on a treasure hunt inside the house to find hidden treasures in it.
  4. Set up a play podium: An easy way to hone your children’s communication skills is to set up a play podium for them, where they can demonstrate their orator skills, and learn the skills of being on stage.
  5. Any physical activity: Kids have uncontrollable energy, and want to engage in physical activities. Schedule time for them to do some dance, yoga, any exercise they like, and more to keep them physically active.

Pollution limits their time outdoors as well, but a few outdoor activities will keep them active.

  1. Gardening: Avoid being outside in peak pollution hours, but you can engage them in taking care of plants, and other gardening activities.
  2. Library visit: Inculcate a habit of reading in the kids by regularly visiting a library with them.
  3. Sideway Chalk Activities: Get them some chalk, and let them paint the town (sideway) red with it.
  4. Take them shopping: On your regular grocery visits, or dry cleaning visit, let them accompany you to feel like grown-ups.
  5. Animal/Bird Watching: Hone an interest in admiring and building a bond with nature in children by taking them on walks to spot all animals and birds you can spot.

These simple ways will keep your kids happy and engaging kids without screens in winter.
