Telecom Bill 2023: After considering the Indian Telegraph Act of 1885, the Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1933, and the Telegraph Wires (Unlawful Possession) Act of 1950, the Parliament recently passed the Telecommunications Bill 2023, which aims to reform the outdated telecom laws. In the interest of the public and to stop incitement to commit crimes, the bill, which is being led by Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, allows for message interceptions and transmission halts during emergencies.
The bill establishes guidelines for the distribution of spectrum and offers a non-auction method for allocating airspace to satellite-based communication services. There is a clause in the new telecom bill regarding crimes involving SIM card spoofing and cloning. According to the Telecommunications Bill, 2023, telecom companies are required to obtain verifiable biometric information whenever they establish a new connection. After a brief debate, the Telecommunications Bill, 2023 was approved by voice vote and gives the Center the authority to seize control of a telecom network in the event of a public emergency or in the interest of public safety.
