Upcoming Women-Led Movies 2024: Gone are the days when a director and producer needed a strong male dominance on screen for their movies to work. With the work of actors like Anushka Sharma, Priyanka Chopra, and Vidya Balan there is a cinema that is willing to take a women-led project with high stakes. More recently, the likes of Alia Bhatt and Kangana Ranaut are taking the legacy forward with their upcoming movies where women take charge.   

Alpha 

Release Date: TBA

Yashraj Spu Universe announced an upcoming women-led movie titled ‘Alphna’ starring Alia Bhatt and Munjya famed Sharvari. The announcement was made on YRF’s Instagram with a title introduction with the voiceover of Alia Bhatt. The voiceover highlights the significance of the word ‘alpha’ as the first letter in the Greek language and the ruler of ‘jungle’. The movie is now in the production stage with not much known about the plot.

Jigra 

Release Date: 11 October 

Helmed by Vasan Bala, Jigra stars Alia Bhatt in the lead role as the sister of Vedang Raina’s character. Though much of the film’s plot is still kept under wraps, it is believed to be a movie about the shared bond of a brother and sister who are each other’s only pillar. Alia Bhatt called it a story of “courage, passion, and determination” while talking about her production ventures as she also produces the film along with Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta,and Somen Mishra.

Ulajh 

Release Date: 2 August 

Led by Janhvi Kapoor as a young IFS officer shouldering the legacy of patriots in her family. It is one of the patriotic thrillers led by women in Bollywood following the lines of ‘Raazi’ and ‘Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl’. The movie also stars  Gulshan Devaiah, Roshan Mathew, Rajesh Tailang, and Adil Hussain.

Stree 2 

Release Date: 15 August 

Shraddha Kapoor returns with ‘Stree 2’, a sequel to ‘Stree’ a film based on the folk legend about a woman ghost who abducts men. The film is directed by Amar Kaushik and produced by Dinesh Vijan and Jyoti Deshpande. The sequel is set in the same quaint town of Chanderi where this time a headless man is terrorizing its residents.

Emergency 

Release Date: 6 September 

Kangana Ranaut has written, directed, and acted in the film based on the Independent India's Darkest Time, the Emergency of 1987. Ranaut plays the role of the then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi who announced a state of emergency across the country citing internal and external threats to the country. 

From ‘Alpha’ to ‘Emergency’ the women of B-town take up strong female characters promising to inspire and acknowledge the strengths of womanhood.
