UPI News: The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has implemented new standards that limit the use of special characters in UPI transaction IDs. Beginning February 1, 2025, banks, third-party applications, and payment service providers shall produce transaction IDs only in alphanumeric characters. The central system will reject any transaction ID that contains special characters such as hashtags, percentage signs, or “@” to ensure standardization and increased security across digital payment platforms. The NPCI has issued directions to all service providers highlighting the need for compliance in preventing disruptions in UPI transactions.
To avoid payment failures, customers must keep their UPI programs up to current and downloaded from legitimate sources such as the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Apps obtained from third-party sources may have delays in updating, potentially leading to transaction difficulties. This regulation is one of a succession of rule changes benefiting citizens, such as a decrease in commercial cylinder pricing, which has offered financial relief to many. However, for UPI users, noncompliance with the amended transaction ID standards may result in rejected payments, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the NPCI’s modified specifications
