Hailing from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, Shashank's family included three brothers, a sister, and his parents. When Shashank was in Class 12th, his father who worked as the Deputy Commissioner in the Agriculture Department died an untimely death. After his father’s death, Shashank left his studies and took up the family responsibilities. Shashank always had a dream of going to IIT, and so he did by securing 137th rank in the IIT entrance examination. After pursuing B. Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT, Shashank got a job in a multinational company.
Shashank then left his job in 2004 and started preparing for UPSC civil services as the job seemed unsatisfactory to him. Shashank while preparing for UPSC in Delhi started taking coaching and teaching students. However, the living expenses in Delhi were much higher, so he started traveling regularly from Meerut to Delhi, and during his travel time from Meerut to Delhi, he used to study the whole time in trains.
Shashank understood the difficulty level of the UPSC exam very well, so he prepared for the exam fiercely for the first two years and then gave the paper. In the very first attempt, he got selected in the Allied Services but wasn’t satisfied. Shashank tried again and secured the fifth rank in the 2007 UPSC Civil Service examination. At present, Shashank is working as a collector in the Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh.
