Vegetable Price Hike: Rise in Onion, Tomato, and Potato Prices Increases Tension Once Again

Vegetable Price Hike: After pulses, rising prices for potatoes, onions, and tomatoes have begun to put pressure on the retail inflation rate, making it more challenging for the RBI to lower interest rates during the monetary policy committee meeting the next month. The retail prices of potatoes, onions, and tomatoes have increased by 25%, 53%, and 70%, respectively, in the past month.


Operation Green Scheme Fails to Reduce Inflation

In 2019, the government launched Operation Green Scheme to stabilize the prices of potatoes, onions, and tomatoes. The goal was to include 22,000 haats in the value chain to maintain the supply of perishable goods. For this scheme, Rs 500 Cr was allocated so that subsidies and other benefits could be provided for building storage facilities and other facilities for these three products.
