Padma Awards 2024: The prestigious Padma Awards was conferred by President Draupadi Murmu on several eminent personalities from the fields of art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature, and more. Actor Mithun Chakraborty, Singer Usha Uthup, former vice president M Venkaiah Naidu, among others received the honors in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. 

What are the Padma Awards?

Padma Awards are one of the highest civilian awards of the country felicitating the achievements of individuals across disciplines and fields for their distinguished services. The awards are given in three categories namely, ‘Padma Vibushan’, ‘Padma Bhushan’, and ‘Padma Shri’. 

The awards are announced every year on the eve of Republic Day and are conferred by the President of India in a ceremonial function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.  

Meaning of the three categories of Padma Awards 

‘Padma Vibushan’ is awarded for ‘exceptional and distinguished service’. Distinguished service of a high order is honoured by a ‘Padma Bhushan’ and Padma Shri marks distinguished service in any field of activities or disciplines where an element of public service is involved.

Padma Awards are not restricted to popular and prominent personalities who are in the media light. The general public can also fill the nomination for the Padma Awards. Moreover, a self-nomination is also valid. All nominations and reservations for the award need to be filled online from 1 May to 15th September annually.    

Eminent Winners of Padma Awards 2024

For the year 2024, the list of Padma Awards consists of 5 Padma Vibhushan. 17 Padma Bhushan, and 110 Padma Shri Awards out of which 30 are women awardees, 8 people from the category of Foreigners, and 9 Posthumous awardees.

Among the winners of Padma Bhushan were, actress Vyjayantimala Bali, former vice president M Venkaiah Naidu, Bindeshwar Pathak, the founder of Sulabh International Social Service Organisation posthumously awarded for “encouraging millions to adopt hygienic and safe sanitation practices” as President wrote in a tweet. 

Actor Mithun Chakraborty and singer Usha Uthup have been awarded the Padma Bhushan.
