Delhi Through A Feminist Lens: Jahanara Begum, The Woman Who Built Chandini Chowk

Delhi:  When we look at the history of Delhi, it is dominated by names of patriarchs of multiple descent, particularly the Mughals, but women have played an equally crucial role in the trade and architecture of Delhi. 

Jahanara Begum was one such steel woman of intellect and taste for art. She was the eldest daughter of Shah Jahan, who oversaw the design and layout of the Chandini Chowk in the city to put Delhi on the world's trade map of the time. Unfortunately, the history conveniently names Shah Jahan as the chief architect of the area, whereas Jahanar, who was also the richest woman of her time in the world, had the vision to bring Chandini Chowk to life.
