World Environment Day 2025: 5th June is celebrated as World Environment Day annually. To raise awareness about the pressing issues threatening the environment and encourage people to explore sustainable living habits, World Environment Day is a yearly occurrence held globally, with more than 150 countries participating. 

The day marks the largest international platform to raise awareness and ignite actions towards the good of the environment.   

Every organisation, from schools to offices, plans eco-drives, sustainability awareness programs, and tree plantation activities on the occasion to partake in the bigger celebrations, while spreading the word about the need to take action for a healthy planet.

Date & Theme 

World Environment Day will be celebrated on 5th June 2025 with the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally.”

The theme for each year brings the focus to a specific topic or concern that requires urgent action from the global community. This year's theme aims to tackle the pressing hazards of plastic pollution that has contaminated not just air, oceans, and soil but also our bodies in the form of plastic pollution. 

As per the official UNEP site, this year’s celebration is a “call for collective action to tackle plastic pollution.”

Host Country 

Spearheading the celebrations of the annual occasion is the Republic of Korea as the global host for World Environment Day 2025.

History 

World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 during the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.

The first celebration of the annual event took place in 1973 with the theme, “Only One Earth”. Since its inception, each year a new theme and one host country lead the global platform by promoting public awareness on one topic. 

Significance 

Through the global collaborations of global leaders, governments, public communities, and individuals, World Environment Day raises awareness for the environment and sustainable options to keep it thriving. With policy making and international collaboration, the event pushes people to take action towards a better planet.
