World Homeopathy Day 2024: Homoeopathy is hailed as the second largest system of medicine in the world by the World Health Organization. And yet, there are numerous myths floating around the efficiency, side effects, and healing of Homoeopathic medicine. Discussed here are some of the most common myths about Homeopathy with the actual facts as backed by the science of medicine.
Homoeopathy medicines work by triggering the natural defences of the body. The diluted amount of plants, minerals, and other natural substances with the help of water and alcohol are shaken in the process of potentization to make the medicines in the form of tablets, liquid, gels or sugar pellets.
1 Myth: Homoeopathic medicines act slowly.
A popular myth surrounding the medicinal branch of Homeopathy is its effectiveness is slow and hence the results are late. The speed of healing of any illness depends on the stage at which the patient is treated. The same holds true for Homeopathy. In the cases of acute diseases, the response time of the medicine is within minutes with a few days needed for chronic illness.
2 Myth: Homoeopathy medicines are placebo.
Homoeopathy is often labelled as the ‘placebo’ having no active properties to cure illness and hence ineffective. In actuality, these medicines go through a dilution process called ‘potentization’ where the crude drug substances are systematically diluted with alcohol or water by shaking. The diluted medicines have no residue on the drug and are clinically tested.
3 Myth: Homoeopathic Medicines contain steroids.
It is not true, on the contrary, these medicines are derived from natural sources like plants and minerals and are manufactured under strict standardisation guidelines with several quality checks. Moreover, homoeopathic medicines are sweet, unlike the bitter taste of steroids.
4 Myth: Homoeopathic Medicines are not for diabetics.
The sweet taste of Homoeopathic Medicines has made people believe that diabetic patients cannot be treated with these medicines.
Diabetic patients are advised to avoid sugar rich in glucose. On the other hand, despite having a sweet taste, Homoeopathic medicines have a complex sugar content called lactose, hence making it safe for diabetic patients.
5 Myth: Homoeopathic Medicines can’t be taken with other medicines
It is not necessarily true. Homoeopathic medicine can be consumed with other medicines and even reduces side effects caused by Chemotherapy. If there is an interference needed your homoeopath will let you know.
