World Laughter Day 2024: As it is said, “Laughter is the best medicine,” there’s not a single day that we shouldn’t be laughing. Laughing not only means someone tells you a joke and you are laughing, but it also represents a good mood and a small smile that brightens your day. Social media and other entertainment sources help us to be happy and cheerful throughout the day. While people are busy scrolling through Instagram, Facebook, and other apps, what actually made us happy were those childhood days when we used to sit in front of the television and watch some rib-tickling Indian shows that have become etched in our memories. These shows gave us good storylines, comic timings, and some unforgettable iconic characters who will forever remain in our hearts just like our childhood days.

Let us make a trip down memory lane and remember some of the best Indian sitcom characters who made us go ROFL with their hilarious screen presence.

Daya Ben (TMKOC)

If you haven’t seen “Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah,” you are clearly missing out on one of the best Indian comedy shows that still remains iconic. What more iconic were its characters,  and out of all of them, Dayaben was the most hilarous yet subtle character in the show. Played by Disha Vakani, everything was unique about Dayaben, her garba style, her screeching laughter, and her dialogues like “Hey Maa, Mataji.” Not only this, she has always kept her family at her topmost priority,  from making delicious meals for Tapu ke papa, to taking care of dadaji, and making sure Tapu excels in his studies.

Hansa and Praful (Khichdi)

Another iconic duo of our childhood favourite show “Khichdi,” Hansa and Praful were the most lovable and realistic characters played by Rajeev Mehta and Supriya Pathak. Playing a dumb character with an immense humour level was what Praful played, and Hansa was just the cherry on top, adding more humour to his dumbness. The confidence by which he used to make Hansa understand some meanings with utterly lame and illogical sense made us laugh out loud. And one of the most iconic lines when Hansa asks Praful, “Ae Praful confuse matlab,” and Praful’s hilarious body language while answering the question was our favourite moment.

Musaddi Lal (Office Office)

Office Office, an Indian television show, was extremely popular at the time. A man named Mussadi Lal, played by Pankaj Kapoor, was constantly asked for bribes to complete tasks. But he was a genuinely honest person who hated corruption. Pankaj Kapoor’s perfect portrayal of a clever and funny man made him an excellent choice to play Musaddi Lal. His frustration with the system and his futile attempts to navigate it make for amusing situations.

Chandramukhi Chautala (FIR)

Chandramukhi Chautala is a tough, fearless female cop with a no-nonsense approach. Kavita Kaushik’s unconventional methods and quirky personality make her a memorable character. Her unwavering pursuit of justice, combined with her comedic timing and eccentricities, add depth and humour to the show, making her a popular character among viewers.

Gopi (FIR)

Perfectly complimenting Chandramukhi’s wittyness and attitude was Gopi’s loyal and slightly dim-witted personality. His innocence and earnestness frequently result in amusing situations as he tries to assist Chandramukhi with her investigations. Despite his occasional clumsiness, Gopi's pure heart and unwavering loyalty make him a likable character who provides comic relief during crime-solving adventures.

Roshesh Sarabhai (Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai)

Roshesh is the epitome of a quirky and dramatic poet. His exaggerated expressions, fondness for reciting cheesy poetry, and eccentric demeanor never cease to amuse. Roshesh’s constant clashes with his sophisticated family members, particularly his mother, provide a comedic contrast, emphasizing the absurdity of his poetic ambitions in the face of high society snobbery.
