Japan Earthquake: The Associated Press (AP) reported that a strong earthquake rocked Kyushu, Japan, on Monday, January 13, with a magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter scale, citing information from the country’s meteorological service. In response, authorities issued a tsunami warning for numerous places, but no damage or injuries have been reported thus far. Following the earthquake, Miyazaki had a 20-centimeter-high tsunami.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) calculated the earthquake’s depth to be 37 kilometers. NERV, Japan’s earthquake monitoring service, reported that the tremor originated near the Hyuga-Nada Sea. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake struck Miyazaki Prefecture around 9:29 p.m. local time. In the most impacted areas, the strength was rated as less than 5 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale, which runs from 0 to 7. Tsunami warnings remain in effect in Miyazaki and Kochi.
