Yamuna River Flooding: Taj Mahal and Temples Submerged as Water Levels Rise

19 Jul, 2023

Following its surge in Delhi, the Yamuna River continues to overflow, impacting several cities in Uttar Pradesh. These photographs from Agra show rising water levels entering residential areas. The Yamuna River in Agra reached alarming levels on Sunday, resulting in a historic occurrence whereby the Taj Mahal and its Mughal Garden were submerged for the first time in 45 years. The municipal administration, on the other hand, has taken the necessary precautions and wrapped up its preparations to safeguard the iconic monuments.

The surging Yamuna River has flooded Sikandra's sacred Kailash Mahadev Temple, invading its sanctum sanctorum. As a result, the Kailash fair, which was initially scheduled for the third Monday of Sawan on July 24, has been postponed and rescheduled. The Yamuna's floodwaters have also impacted the Kailash temple complex and nearby villages. Furthermore, the road connecting the village to Baldev near the Kailash temple has been submerged, cutting off six neighbouring villages.
