Akshaya Tritiya 2025: An auspicious day in the springtime of the Hindu calendar, Akshaya Tritiya holds immense value for the followers of Hinduism and Jainism. The word Akshya means eternal, and tritiya refers to the third day in the month of Vaisakh, therefore, any deed done on this auspicious day is believed to yield multifold blessings, prosperity, and wealth. Akshya Tritya is observed on the third tithi of the Shukla Paksha of the Vaishakha month as per the Hindu calendar. It implies that this year Akshya Tritiya will fall on 30th April, Wednesday. The day is dedicated to doing good deeds and buying valuable stuff like gold, which also represents a sense of financial security and investment. 

History of Akshya Tritiya

In the Hindu mythology, several origin stories trace the beginnings of Akshya Trithi. Two of the prominent ones are the Mahabharata and Kuber.

During the 12-year exile of the Pandavas, Lord Krishna once visited them without prior knowledge. Upon his arrival, Draupadi had no lavish meal to feast on her guest, so she fell on Krishna’s feet and asked for forgiveness. Lord Krishna blessed Draupadi and gave her the Akshya Patra, or a magical eternal bowl that will never run out of food. 

Aksya Tritiya is also said to be the day when Lord Kuber was bestowed with the responsibility of guarding the wealth of heaven with the blessings of Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma.

Other Legends Related To Askhya Tritiya

Akshya Tritiya is also known as Akti or Akhaa Teej, believed to be a favourable time for new beginnings and prosperity. As per Indian mythology, several legends are associated with this day.  

One legend suggests that the Treta Yug started on the day of Akshya Tritiya, and Lord Prashuram, the sixth incarnation of Vishnu, was born on this day. 

Another legend says that Maharishi Ved Vyas started narrating the Mahabharata to Lord Ganesha on this day. 

In another legend, Lord Krishna met his childhood friend Sudama on this day. 

Ganga is believed to descend on Earth from heaven on Akshaya Tritiya as well.
