Baisakhi Wishes: Baisakhi, also known as Vaisakhi, is a colourful and happy festival celebrated throughout India, particularly in the northern province of Punjab. Baisakhi, celebrated every year on April 13 or 14, commemorates the Sikh New Year, the harvest festival, and the founding of the Khalsa Panth. This year, Baisakhi will be celebrated on Sunday, 13 April. The festival is based on religious, cultural, and agricultural traditions, celebrating life, community, and appreciation.

Baisakhi History

The origins of Baisakhi may be traced back to two significant occurrences. Baisakhi has traditionally been a harvest celebration for farmers in Punjab and other northern Indian regions.  It is the period when Rabi crops are harvested, and farmers express gratitude to the divine for a plentiful harvest.

Another milestone occurred in 1699 when Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, designated Baisakhi as the day to establish the Khalsa Panth, a separate Sikh identity. On this day, he established the Panj Pyare (Five Beloved Ones) and urged Sikhs to maintain righteousness and make sacrifices for truth and justice. This festival is extremely significant in Sikh history.

Baisakhi Significance

Baisakhi is highly significant in religious, cultural, and agricultural contexts.  For Sikhs, it is one of the most significant days of the year, commemorating Guru Gobind Singh Ji's creation of the Khalsa Panth in 1699.  This event signaled the start of a distinct Sikh identity based on equality, courage, and dedication. Spiritually, it represents a dedication to faith and holiness.

Baisakhi is a popular cultural celebration, particularly in Punjab, where it displays strong traditions of music, dancing, and communal togetherness.  It is also a significant agricultural event that celebrates the successful harvest of Rabi crops. For farmers, it is a day of thanksgiving and joy, as they praise nature and the divine for a plentiful harvest and pray for continuous abundance in the future seasons.

Baisakhi Celebrations

Devotees visit Gurdwaras in the early morning.  Akhand Path (continuous reading of the Guru Granth Sahib) is observed.  Sacred processions known as Nagar Kirtans take place, comprising devotional singing, martial arts exhibitions (Gatka), and colourful floats.

Traditional dances such as Bhangra and Gidda are performed. People dress up in colorful ethnic clothes and celebrate with drum beats (dhol) and Punjabi folk tunes.

In Gurdwaras, everyone, regardless of caste or creed, is offered langar (community meal). Sarson da saag, makki di roti, chole, laddoos, and kheer are among the celebratory Punjabi dishes served in homes.

Baisakhi festivals are held in villages and cities, with cultural performances, games, market stalls, and rides for children.
