Eid al-Adha 2025: Eid al-Adha is one of the two most important Islamic celebrations observed by Muslims worldwide. It marks the end of the annual Hajj journey to Mecca and is a time for intense spiritual reflection, collective prayer, and charitable gestures.

Eid al-Adha History

Eid al-Adha’s history is based on the Quranic story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his unshakeable commitment to God. According to Islamic belief, Allah instructed Ibrahim in a dream to sacrifice his beloved son, Ismail (Ishmael), as a form of devotion. Despite the intense emotional conflict, Ibrahim prepared to carry out the command. However, just as he was about to perform the sacrifice, Allah intervened and replaced Ismail with a ram. This deed reflected Ibrahim's complete submission and trust in God.

This event is recalled annually during Eid al-Adha. It demonstrates the force of faith, the courage to make enormous sacrifices for God, and the Divine’s limitless mercy. The story teaches Muslims a valuable lesson, encouraging them to prioritise their religion above all else and believe in God’s will.

Eid al-Adha Traditions and Customs

Eid al-Adha celebrations traditionally begin with special congregational prayers (Salat al-Eid) at mosques or open prayer sites early after sunrise. After the prayers, sermons are offered to remind believers of the importance of the day.

The most common ceremony is Qurbani, which involves the sacrifice of an acceptable animal (such as a sheep, goat, cow, or camel). The meat is then divided into three portions: one for the family, one for relatives and friends, and another for the poor and needy. This allocation assures that everyone, regardless of income, may enjoy the festivities.

Throughout the day, families visit one another, exchange gifts, and share joyous dinners. It’s a time to celebrate reunions, enhance family ties, and share joy.
