Heeramandi Season 2: One of the finest directors in the Bollywood industry, Sanjay Leela Bhansali made his much-awaited digital debut with ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’. The web series made its grand premiere on the OTT platform Netflix, with an ensemble cast of Bollywood’s finest to newest. While viewers were left dissatisfied with only eight episodes in the first part, speculations about the second season were buzzing amongst fans, and just like it was anticipated, the series has been renewed for another season, which was confirmed by the streaming platform and Bhansali on social media.
Sharing a post on its ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) account, Netflix India and Sanjay Leela Bhansali announced the second season. The streaming platform shared a video of a flash mob of 100 dancers dancing to the songs “Sakal Ban” and “Tilasmi Bahein,” with a caption that read, “Mehfil phir se jamegi, Heeramandi: Season 2 jo aa raha hai.” The post heightened the excitement amongst fans as the first season received good responses for its grandeur and intricate storyline. From the opulent sets to lavish outfits, The big-budget period drama captured the nuances and atmosphere of the pre-Partition courtesans, who possessed significant power and influence during India’s freedom struggle.
While the renewal for season 2 was announced by Netflix, Sanjay Leela Bhansali reportedly said that the decision was solely dependent on the streaming platform, whether it wants to continue the show or not. No further information has been provided about the release date, time, cast, or more. There are speculations about whether the same cast will continue the second season, or there could be some additions to the characters. However, talking with Variety, Bhansali said, “In ‘Heeramandi 2,’ the women now come from Lahore to the film world. They leave Lahore after the partition and most of them settle in the Mumbai film industry or Kolkata film industry. So that journey in the bazaar remains the same. They still have to dance and sing, but this time for the producers and not for the nawabs. So that’s the second season we are planning, let’s see where it goes.”
The first season starred Manisha Koirala as “Mallikajaan,” Aditi Rao Hydari as “Bibbojaan,” Richa Chadha as “Lajjo,” Sonakshi Sinha as “Fareedan,” Sanjeeda Shaikh as “Waheeda,” Sharmin Segal as “Alamzeb,” Taha Shah Badussha as “Tajdar,” and others in key roles. The series marked the directorial digital debut of Bhansali and became the most-viewed Indian series on the streamer globally within a week of its May 1 premiere. The songs also recieved appreciation for giving the retro and majestic vibes, adding to the allure of the powerful performances given by each character.
