Independence Day 2024: India will be celebrating its 78th Independence Day. With celebrations and plannings underway, this year’s theme surrounds the ‘Viksit Bharat’ theme, highlighting the government’s vision of India becoming a developed nation till 2047. On this day, citizens celebrate independence through flying kites, and the PM hoists the national flag at the Red Fort. Along with this, several other cultural event takes place.  

Indian Social Reformers

India’s journey to independence was more than just a struggle against colonial rule; it was also a profound social revolution that required the tireless efforts of numerous reformers. As the country sought independence from British rule, these social reformers played an important role in shaping its socio-cultural fabric by advocating for equality, justice, and empowerment. Their contributions laid the groundwork for a more inclusive and progressive society, inspiring future generations to continue their legacy of social change.

Let us remember some of the prominent social reformers and their contributions for the Indian Independence.

Gopal Krishna Gokhale

Gopal Krishna Gokhale was a prominent figure in the Indian freedom movement, known for his commitment to social reform and constitutional principles. As a mentor to Mahatma Gandhi, Gokhale’s philosophy of gradual reform, as well as his emphasis on education, social upliftment, and political participation, contributed to the formation of the Indian nationalist movement. 

B.R. Ambedkar

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, widely regarded as the primary architect of the Indian Constitution, was a tireless advocate for the rights of Dalits and marginalized communities. His efforts to end caste discrimination and promote social justice helped shape India’s democratic framework. Ambedkar’s leadership in the Constitution's drafting ensured the inclusion of progressive measures aimed at uplifting disadvantaged groups, promoting equality, and protecting fundamental rights.

Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda’s teachings and reforms went beyond religion and addressed societal issues like caste discrimination and gender inequality. His emphasis on education, especially for women and young people, as well as his advocacy for a renewed sense of national identity and cultural pride, had a significant impact on the Indian Renaissance. Vivekananda’s vision of a united and progressive India struck a chord with many people, inspiring a new generation of reformers and nationalists.

Sarojini Naidu

Sarojini Naidu, also known as the ‘Nightingale of India’, is a renowned poet, freedom fighter, social reformer, and the first woman to be elected president of the Indian National Congress. Her advocacy for women’s rights, contributions to the independence movement, and efforts to promote education and social reform all helped to advance the cause of women and the nationalist movement as a whole. 

Savitribai Phule

Savitribai Phule pioneered education and social reform. As one of India’s first female teachers, she founded the first girls’ school in Pune and worked tirelessly to promote education for women and lower-caste communities, thereby promoting gender equality in nineteenth-century India.

Subhash Chandra Bose

Subhash Chandra Bose was a dynamic leader and key figure in the Indian independence movement, known for his radical approach to breaking free from British rule. His establishment of the Indian National Army and efforts to rally support for armed resistance to colonial powers were critical to the nationalist movement.

Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa, a Nobel laureate and the founder of the Missionaries of Charity, dedicated her life to helping the poorest of the poor. Her work in Kolkata, providing care and compassion to the impoverished and dying, received global attention and highlighted the importance of humanitarian efforts. She received the Nobel Peace Prize, the Bharat Ratna, the Order of Merit, and a number of other accolades.
