Delhi: Kailash Gahlot, one of the closest aides of Arvind Kejriwal, and a former member of the Aam Aadmi Party resigned from his position on 18 November. Soon after his resignation, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party citing unfulfilled promises and principles dilution as his reason to walk out of Kejriwal’s party ahead of elections.

Kailash Gahlot is a cabinet minister in the Delhi government. He held the Administrative Reforms, Transport, Home, Women and Child Development, and Information Technology ministries as one of the senior-most members of the Aam Aadmi Party. He was the representative of the Najafgarh constituency in the Delhi Assembly.
Post his resignation from AAP, Gahlot is now a member of the Bhartiya Janta Party.
Born on 22 July 1974, Gahlot hails from the Mitraun Village in Najafgarh, Delhi. He is an alum of Sri Venkateshwar College, University of Delhi from where he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1995. He is also a Bachelor’s and Master's in Law from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi.
Before joining politics in 2015, he was an advocate in the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court and boasts a career of 16 years in law with significant achievements in varied sectors. He has also served as the Member Executive of the Bar Association of the High Court of Delhi from 2005 to 2007.
His political career began with the Aam Aadmi Party in 2015 when he was elected as the MLA of the Najafgarh constituency in the Delhi elections. During his tenure under the second and third Kejriwal ministry, he held several key portfolios including Transport, Environment, Revenue, Administrative Reforms, Information Technology, Law, Justice and Legislative Affairs, and Finance and Planning.

Gahalot has always been viewed as a close aide to the former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, hence his decision to join BJP was met with several scrutiny with some alleging he did it under the pressure of the ED.
In 2018, Gahlot was under the radar of the Income Tax Department linking him to an alleged tax evasion case.
