Laxmi Narayan Tripathi On Coming Out, Bullying, Abuse, And Owning Her Identity With Pride

Pride 2024: Eminent Hijra community activist Laxmi Narayan Tripathi shares her take on coming out, experiencing bullying and abuse at an age when she was too young to describe it, and finally owning herself with pride and in full glam. 

“I was always Rekha”- Laxmi 

Laxmi has been an effervescent person since her childhood and has received love and support from her parents which only made her stronger to face the world head on. However, her cocoon of comfort also took her away from the atrocities the Hijra community had been facing. Her ambition to start a dance academy led her to become one of the founding members of the first Hijra community across Asia. She never pitied herself to which remarks “I was never Meena Kumari, I was always Rekha.”
