Lookback 2023: Major Headlines this year - Part 1; Sakshi Malik Quits, Manipur Conflict, New Parliament Building & More

National Affairs 2023: The political, and sociological climate in India in 2023 was filled with accomplishments on one side and horrors and terrors on the other. While some of these headlines brought pride, hope, and joy to Indians, others evoked rage, repulsion, and terror. 

Wrestlers protests against Wrestling Federation of India 

On January 18, 2023, Indian wrestlers protested at Jantar Mantar, accusing WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Saran of sexual exploitation. Complaints were filed against him for harassing 7 female wrestlers, including a minor. The Supreme Court got involved, resulting in a clash with Delhi Police and rioting charges. On December 21, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik quit wrestling, citing injustice, as Bhushan's associate became the new WFI Chief. This led to the Sports Ministry abolishing the WFI.

Deputy CM Manish Sisodia arrested 

The former deputy chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia was arrested by the Electoral Directorate (ED) on February 26. He was arrested for his connections with the Delhi excise policy. He was in judicial custody in Tihar for the alleged ‘irregularities’ in the now-scrapped excise policy.

BJP’s Tripartite Win in Legislative Election out of 5 States

BJP tasted victory in three states, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh out of the five including Telangana and Mizoram. Bhajan Lal Sharma became the new Chief Minister in Rajasthan, Shivraj Singh in Madhya Pradesh, Vishnu Deo Sai in Chhatisgarh, Revanth Reddy became Telangana’s new CM, and Lalduhoma ruled in Mizoram.  

Ethnic Conflict in Manipur 

The animosity between the Meities and Kuki tribes took another ugly turn in Manipur in May 2023. Around 175 people died in the ethnic violence as of 15 September while 1108 people were injured, displacing 70,000 people in the official reports. 

New Parliament Building Inaugurated by the PM Modi 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Parliament building in May. the architecture of the building was inspired by Indian culture, traditions and symbols. The event was boycotted by 20 opposition parties for violating the protocol of the inauguration meant to be done by the President.
