Early Life & Education

Goyat was born in Begumpur village in Karnal, Haryana, and received his education until the ninth grade at SD Model School. He began boxing in 2006 at the Army Sports Institute and completed his tenth grade there. Neeraj became interested in boxing and began with gymnastics, but when he saw boxers training around him, he was impressed by their level of fitness and longevity, which led him to boxing. In 2001, he was accepted into the Army Sports Institute.

Neeraj Goyat Boxing Career

Neeraj won his first bronze medal in 2007 at India’s Junior National Tournament, followed by gold in 2008 at the Youth National Tournament. Goyat went on to become the first Indian boxer to compete in Olympic qualifiers, winning bronze in Venezuela ahead of the 2016 Summer Games. Goyat has won the WBC Asia title three times: in 2015, 2016 and 2017. In 2017, the World Boxing Council Asia named him “Honorary Boxer of the Year.” Goyat was injured in a car accident in 2019, postponing a planned mega-fight against Amir Khan, and has since resumed fighting and broken records.

Goyat has also appeared on several television shows, including ‘Super Fighting League’ in 2013 and ‘Super Boxing League’ in 2017. In 2017, he made his Bollywood debut with Anurag Kashyap’s film ‘Mukkabaaz’. Goyat also appeared in the 2017 Netflix series ‘Ultimate Beastmaster’, as well as in films ‘Toofaan,’ ‘RRR’, and ‘Ghani’. Goyat has amassed a sizable social media following and has established himself as one of Asia's most well-known athletes.

 

Neeraj Goyat-Jake Paul Fight

Neeraj Goyat gained attention in February 2024 following a confrontation with YouTuber and boxer Jake Paul in Puerto Rico, which was widely shared on Twitter. Goyat initially challenged Paul to a fight on Saturday, March 2. Their encounter in Puerto Rico generated a lot of buzz on social media, with Goyat’s posts receiving more than 150 million views. The conflict prompted Goyat to travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to confront Paul in person. But when Goyat signed with Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), founded by Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian, they put their disagreements aside and became a team. MVP seeks to support athletes’ development and success by granting them creative control.
