Pope Francis Death: Pope Francis, the Catholic Christian religious leader, has passed away. He died at the age of 88. Pope Francis’ real name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio. Pope Francis was born on December 17, 1936, in Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires. His parents immigrated from Italy and settled here. Pope Francis, a Latin American, is the first non-American to be elected Pope in over 1300 years.

Pope Francis’ Early Life

He graduated as a chemical technician before deciding to pursue a priesthood at the Diocesan Seminary of Villa Devoto. On March 11, 1958, he joined the Society of Jesus.  He went on to complete his humanities studies in Chile. He returned to Argentina in 1963 and earned a philosophy degree from the Colegio de San José in San Miguel. With Pope Francis’ death, the process of electing the next Pope will begin.
