South Indian Bridal Jewelry:  This year brides from PV Sindhu to Sobhita Dhulipala shared glimpses of their regal South Indian bridal jewelry, with each piece speaking of culture and tradition. The Baasikam worn across the forehead to bring the focus of the bride and groom to each other in the shubh mahurat holds poignant value in Telugu weddings, and the matha patti is an essential piece to adorn the forehead of the bride

Shobhita Dhulipala and PV Sindhu both sported a Baasikam with two varied versions of matthapatti. Dhulipala stunned in all-real gold bridal jewelry with the head accessories in the same element, whereas Sindhu opted for real Zambian emeralds and uncut diamonds for her matthapatti.

Keerthy Suresh was also among the ones to wear a Netti Chutti or matha patti in emerald and gold accents. She opted for something sophisticated for her beaded traditional matthapatti whereas Dhuliapa kept it all maximal.

Suresh’s necklaces consisted of classic Attikai (South Indian necklace) and a long Haaram; Dhulipala, on the other hand, wore a Surya and Chandra motif-laden tiered necklaces with a huge matarmala, Kundan choker in jalebi design, and a mango haram haar.

Hydari’s take on her wedding jewelry was more delicate and simple with polki diamonds, rubies, and pearls adding a regal touch to her temple jewelry.

Sindhu went all in with diamonds and emeralds, multiple-layered necklaces, and matching earrings.

The South Indian motifs, and accessories that were common across Hydari, Suresh, Sindhu, and Dhuliapala were their vaddanam (waist belts), gold vankii (arm belts) Surya and Chandra motifs on hair, signifying balance and harmony, and septum nose ring (except Sindhu).

Wedding jewelry is an extension of culture, traditions and beliefs in India. The ‘Solah Shringaar’ is sixteen essential elements of a woman’s adornments especially to be worn on her wedding day. For the South Indian brides, the same adornments find a place on their bridal look from head to toe. Traditionally wearing gold jewelry only, several brides have moved to gems like emeralds and diamonds for their wedding day, but the elements of the jewelry stay the same signifying the profound meaning it has for them.
