Valentine 2024: Love has found new meanings and new definitions in every era. The evolution of humankind has been parallel to the evolving meaning of love, and its forms of expression. Every older generation tries to swear by their version of love and attempts to pedestal it as the ultimate love.
In contemporary times, GenZ finds themselves in the witness box with allegations like 'this generation does not know what love is', and 'there is no craze of love or valentine today like it used to have' among many. This begs the question, are GenZ non-believers of love? Yes, then why and 'no' then what does love mean for GenZ and how is the celebration of love aka Valentine so different in this age and time?
GenZ's relationship with Love
GenZ often bears the tag of being nonchalant, individualistic, and cosmopolitan individuals. Their free and inclusive thoughts and self-assured actions tend to intimidate and even baffle people around them but what amazes the most is their take on love. GenZ's love is not rooted in obligations and boundaries but in individualism and liberation. So no, GenZ does not hate love, they believe in love, value it, fall in love, and fall hard and passionately, but they do not let that love become manipulative or regulated by the societal expectations or definitions of love. They also recognize the existence and significance of love beyond romantic love.
Significance of Valentine's for GenZ
The significance of love for GenZ depends on cultural, social, and personal factors. For them, love is not necessarily about grand gestures or celestial words, something that comes from their realist and pragmatic approach to life. Romance and romantic gestures for them go beyond materialism also to thoughtfulness, honesty, and loyalty.
Social Media plays a significant role in the life of most GenZm shaping their worldviews on romance and its celebration. Social media PDA and celebration of love in the form of photos and videos not just show their creativity but also their strength to celebrate and share their cherished memories.
commercialization of love has been a double-edged sword on GenZ. on one side they are the groups of people who are hyper-aware of how the capitalist market monetizes on emotions but on the flip side, the shine and shimmer of it all still attract them. however, the best part is the awareness of both of them.
So yeah, GenZ seems to look like the generation of paradox, but love, its expression, and Valentine's hold a special and dear place in their hearts too.
