Waqf Amendment Bill: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board will be organizing a protest against the Waqf Amendment Bill today, March 17, at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Representatives from several Muslim and social organizations, as well as other opposition MPs, have been invited to attend the protest. At the same time, Jagdambika Pal, Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf Amendment Bill and a BJP MP, stated that the AIMPLB protest may cause divisions among the people and threaten the parliamentary system.
On February 13, the JPC presented its report on the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 to Parliament, despite disagreement from the opposition. The Waqf Act of 1995, which regulates Waqf properties, has long been condemned for mismanagement, corruption, and encroachment. The Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 intends to solve these issues by introducing reforms like digitization, improved audits, increased transparency, and legal methods for reclaiming illegally occupied property. The government is expected to introduce this bill in Parliament during the current session (the second phase of the budget session).
