Who is Adar Poonawalla?

According to the latest reports, Dharma Productions is selling half of its shares to Serene Productions, which is owned by the Indian billionaire for 1,000 crore which is half of its revenue for the financial year 2023-24 at Rs. 2000 crore.

Poonawala was born with a silver spoon to the Indian tycoon Cyrus Poonawala, on 14 January 1981 Adar Poonawalla currently holds the chair as the Chief Executive Officer of the Serum Institute of India (SII) headquartered in Pune, Maharashtra founded in 1966 by his father.

With the giant legacy of his father, the humongous responsibility of taking it forward was also relegated to his shoulders, and Adar was aware, determined, and ready.

He completed his primary and higher education at The Bishop’s School in Pune and St. Edmund’s School Canterbury. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Westminster. 

Expansion of Business 

Adar is credited with the expansion of their family’s already existing business after joining SII in 2001 after returning to India. It was only after he joined the SII that they started to export their products in 35 countries with Adar working to further gain substantiality, and global exposure with the help of the World Health Organisation’s accreditation. Doing so would allow SII to work with UN agencies like UNICEF by supplying vaccines to them.

Adar was handed the reins of SII in 2011 when he took the chair as CEO, and till 2015 he has been formative in helping the company to export its products to over 140 countries.

Under this guidance, SII played a significant role in producing and distributing over 280 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to 70 countries. SII today is India’s most valuable unlisted company.
