Chandrayaan 3 Update: Why is the location on the moon where Chandrayaan-3 will land unique?

14 Aug, 2023

India had taken a step towards making history with the launch of Chandrayaan-3. Chandrayaan has now reached lunar orbit and will be able to land on the moon in a few days. ISRO has received evidence indicating that Chandrayaan's 'Vikram Lander' will touchdown in 10 days.

South Landing on South Pole

The first and foremost objective of Chandrayaan 3 is to make a soft landing on the south pole of the moon and if this happens, India will be the first country to achieve this feat . Actually, the South Pole is the place where no one has reached till date. Only one area of the Moon is visible from Earth, known as the close site. Far Sight refers to the section that is not visible. To date, all satellites that have landed on the moon have only done so near the surface. This is due to apprehension over losing its connection while landing on a dark site. Now, if India's Chandrayaan spacecraft successfully lands on the South Pole, also known as the Dark Site, it will make history.
