EWS Flats: 'Governments came but everyone went on to console us, we really got flats after PM Modi's arrival'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to give a big gift to the slum dwellers of Delhi today. PM Modi will inaugurate 3,024 newly constructed EWS (Economically Weaker Section) flats for the rehabilitation of slum dwellers under the 'In-Situ Slum Rehabilitation' project in Delhi's Kalkaji. A program will be organized on Wednesday at 4:30 pm at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. 

The objective of this rehabilitation project is to provide better and healthy living environment with proper facilities to the residents of Jhuggi Jhopri Cluster. The DDA has started three such projects in Kalkaji Extension, Jailarwala Bagh and Kathputli Colony.

Facilities given in flats

The first phase of the project has been completed and 3024 flats are ready to live. These flats have been constructed at a cost of around Rs 345 crore and have been equipped with all civic amenities, including vitrified floor tiles, ceramic tiles, Udaipur green marble counter in the kitchen. Public facilities like community parks, electric sub-stations, sewage treatment plants, dual water pipelines, lifts for clean water supply, underground reservoirs etc. have also been provided. The allotment of flats will provide a sense of ownership as well as security to the people. 

Places where the flats will be made

The DDA has taken up three such projects in Kalkaji Extension, Jailarwala Bagh and Kathputli Colony. Under Kalkaji Extension Project, three slum clusters namely Bhumiless Camp, Navjeevan Camp and Jawahar Camp located at Kalkaji are being rehabilitated in a phased manner. Under Phase-I, 3024 EWS flats have been constructed at a nearby commercial center site lying vacant. 

The slum areas of landless camps will be vacated by rehabilitating the eligible families of landless camps in newly constructed EWS flats. After vacating the landless camp site, the site will be used for rehabilitation of Navjeevan Camp and Jawahar Camp in the second phase.
