Janmashtami Wishes 2024: Janmashtami, sometimes called Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is a major Hindu festival commemorating the birth of Lord Krishna, one of Hinduism's most beloved deities. This event is distinguished by dedication, joy, and a strong sense of spirituality, as devotees from all over the world gather to celebrate the holy birth of Lord Vishnu's eighth avatar. The festival is celebrated on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, which occurs in August or September. This year, Janmashtami will be celebrated on 26th August, Monday.

Janmashtami Festival History

Lord Krishna, considered the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born in the Dwapara Yuga to rid the world of evil and restore dharma (righteousness). Krishna was born in a prison cell in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva, and his uncle, King Kansa, frequently threatened his life, fearing that Krishna would be the one to kill him. Vasudeva brought little Krishna across the Yamuna River to Gokul, where he was raised by Nanda and Yashoda.

Janmashtami Significance

Janmashtami is a celebration of the triumph of good over evil, the value of dharma, and the strength of heavenly love and devotion. The road to enlightenment and liberation (moksha) is emphasized by Krishna through his teachings on karma (duty) and bhakti (devotion). Janmashtami also serve as a reminder of the value of happiness, love, and purity in life with the childhood tales of Kanha, stealing butter (makhan) and playing with the gopis. Lord Krishna is more than a god to many people; he is a companion, mentor, and defender as well.

Janmashtami Celebrations

Janmashtami celebrations include devotional singing, and fasting. Devotees prepare a variety of delicacies and sweets, decorate the temples and their homes, and offer special prayers to Krishna. Janmashtami is marked with a variety of ceremonies and events, including Dahi Handi, Raas Leela, Jhulanotsav, midnight celebrations, fasting, and other acts of devotion.
