Cannes 2024: The prestigious event hosting talented actors, actresses, and the film fraternity from all over the world, Cannes has swarmed the headlines of all the media houses. Among the varied elements making it to titles are the exceptional looks, unique stories, historical moments, legendary icons, and trolls. Indian celebrities particularly have been subjected to trolling for reasons ranging from their looks to their “fake accents.”
The year 2024, has been especially notable for India for the many firsts, and the highest representation from the sub-continent at the international film festival. In a moment of pride, the trolls are not just taking away the luster of our artists but also trivializing their trajectory of hard work. Furthermore, it also sheds light on the vanity of the elements like trolls who even in moments of national gratification try to subdue it by drawing attention to the lacks than the wins.
Take a look at the Indian celebrities who were trolled at the Cannes Film Festival 2024 in contrast to their achievements that should be rather celebrated.
Indian actress and Miss World pageant holder, renowned for her beauty, and humble demeanor, Aishwarya Rai is a regular at Cannes for 22 years now. Representing cosmetics brand L'Oreal at the Cannes Film Festival, Rai’s look was curated by her dearest friends Shane and Falguni Peacock. The first look featured a black bodice with golden 3D floral details and puffy sleeves.

India’s constant representation at Cannes for twenty years continually was apparently not a milestone to focus on for the trolls who trolled her for her flamboyance and drama in her looks. The Cannes queen however thought her fits were “magical.”
Kiara Advani attended the Red Sea Film Foundation’s Women in Cinema Gala Dinner hosted by Vanity Fair. As a representative of women in Indian cinema, Kiara shared her experience, but the trolls thought that she was speaking in a “cringe accent.” Scrutinized for her statement and accent, Kiara’s role at the festival was sidelined by these trolls.

King becomes the first Indian pop artist to walk the red carpet at Cannes 2024. However, what overshadowed his achievements were his “fake accent” in the interview, talking to Brut India. King however, owned the trolling by later sharing a video on Instagram of the same interview with the caption, “jab atti nahi to accent hi nikalta hai desh se bahar…iykyk par mazaa a agaya bkc naacho!!.” King behavior only.

Quieting them Thappar made it clear that she will stay her unapologetic self no matter what trolls say. In her Instagram caption she wrote, “ Yes, I will go all out in Cannes…yes, I will put up my pics on social media & oh yes, I will not be apologetic & defensive about who I am :) Here’s to taking every stereotype ever created & squashing it with my 6-inch killer heels !!!”

While constructive criticism is essential and helpful, trolls may even hamper people's self-esteem too. But these kings and queens have shown that their milestones are going to outshine any troll.
